October 17, 1823 - Pepin and Barnet's Circus Perform Mr. Lasalle's Lot - Vincennes
Victor Pepin and his partner, a man named Mr. Barnet, bought their famous circus performance to Vincennes on October 17, 1823. Their acts featured “horsemanship and feats of agility.”
Victor Pepin (March 8, 1780 – 1845)
The son of Andre Pepin and Judith Dauni, Victor was a native of Albany, New York. Andre Pepin was a native of France. He had migrated to Canada around 1835 and married Judith around 1760. Andre joined the American cause in the early stages of the American Revolution. He served in the Continental Army until the war ended. He moved his family to the region west of Lake Champlain in 1786 to receive his grant of land that Congress awarded war veterans for their service.

Andre took his son Victor with him when he abandoned his family in America, moving to France. He disappeared from history; however, Victor resurfaces in 1807, when he and then partner Jean Breschard moved their circus from Spain.
In America
They brought their circus acts to Boston, Massachusetts, becoming what many historians regard as the first circus act in the United States. The two would go on to establish circus venues in all of the major Eastern seaboard cities. They would also establish the Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia to perform theatrical acts. The partnership lasted until 1815, when Pepin went to France.
Return to United States
Pepin returned to the United States in 1816. He formed partnerships with various men over the next several years, joining with Mr. Barnet to tour the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys by steamboat in 1822 though 1823. They took their world renowned performance to Vincennes on October 17, 1823.Barnett would continue to perform. He would purchase a home in New Albany, Indiana, dying there in 1845. His grave in Fairview Cemetery is unmarked.
