William Willard (Nov. 1, 1809 - Feb. 15, 1881)
A native of Brattleboro Vermont, William was the son of Isaac Willard and Sarah Goodrich Willard. Born deaf, he attended the American School for the Deaf in Hartford Connecticut. French educator Louis Laurent Marie Clerc, a prominent teacher of the deaf, was also his teacher. After his graduation, he taught at the Ohio School for the Deaf. While there, he married Eliza Young, with whom he would have six children. The Williards moved to Indianapolis. Willard proposed beginning a school for the deaf in Indiana. He began traveling around Indiana gathering students for his school. The school opened on October 1, 1843 with twelve students. Soon after the Indiana General Assembly passed a law that funded the school. The law granted the students a free education. This was the sixth school for the deaf in the United States. Willard served as the principal of the Indiana School for the Deaf. Willard passed away in 1881 and is interred in Crown Hill Cemetery.
