The town Oolitic is named for the special grade of limestone upon which the town was built. The name Oolitic us derived from the Greek word "oolite" which means "eggs and stone." Limestone from Oolitic has been used to construct many famous buildings. The Empire State Building was built from this stone and the "Empire Hole" from which the stone was taken can be found about one half mile north of Oolitic.
