October 11, 1887 - Kouts Train Wreck
During the late evening hours of October 11, 1887 a freight train engineer operating a train pulling refrigerated cars heavy-laden with fresh meat failed to see a red semaphore-warning lamp. One half mile ahead the Chicago & Atlantic passenger train No. 12 sat idle on the tracks as the engineer attempted to fix a problem with the train's drive wheel. The freight train plowed into the rear of the passenger train at full speed. The force of the impact split the Pullman sleeper car at the rear of the train. The sleeper car slid forward into the sleeper in front of it and the next three passenger cars, splintering the cars to shreds.  The impact and the resulting fire killed twenty people and injured seventeen. The intense fire burned many of the victims to ash.
