Joe Palooka was a comic book character created by comic strip artist Ham Fisher in 1921. It began publication in 1930, eventually carried by over 900 newspapers. By 1948 the strip was amonst the top five most popular strips in America.

The Indiana Limestone Company had a ten foot, twenty thousand pound statue carved, which was dedicated in 1948. The statue's unveiling in Bedfore was attended by 4500 people, including Ham Fisher. Because of a vandalism problem the statue was moved four times, eventually finding its current resting place in Oolitic, in 1984.
