A Guide to Indiana State Parks |
A Visit to Charlestown State Park
At 5100 acres, Charlestown State Park is the third largest state
park in Indiana . Visitors will find over seventy-two
different species of birds here, including Bald Eagles, Black Vultures and
bluebirds. The rugged Fourteen Mile Creek Valley is one of the oldest un-glaciated
areas in Indiana . The valley's rugged terrain provides
unique perspective on the area's Devonian fossil outcrops and areas of Karst
sinkhole topography. Fourteen Mile Creek flows through the midsection of the
park. The creek's elevation is the same as the Ohio River , thus most of the time
there is no discernable current. During periods when the Ohio River floods, the current in the
creek appear to go in reverse as rising floodwaters back up into the Fourteen Mile Creek Valley . The Department of Natural
Resources is continually developing this southeast Indiana gem.
