A Year of Indiana History - 2016 |
Early in 1816, the Indiana Historical Bureau designated Friday, October 13, 1916 as Indiana Educational Centennial Day. Indiana Governor Samuel M. Ralston declared the event and urged that the state hold a grand extravaganza in honor of the state's educational achievements.
Planning the event
Educational institutions of all levels in the state responded to the call. Colleges, universities, public, private and parochial schools all took part. The event required a great deal of planning and consisted of four divisions: banquet, parade, exhibits and pantomime.

The commission in charge of the event held it at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. A parade started downtown at the State House and proceeded to the fairgrounds, finishing with a complete circumvention of the track at the Fairgrounds. The retinue consisted of marching bands, floats and banners. Exhibitors had filled the Fine Arts Building at the Fairgrounds with a multitude of exhibits ranging from science, agriculture and playground ideas. Purdue University played a leading role in the event, providing its band for the parade and entertainment throughout the event. A three hour, mammoth pantomime capped the event in the late afternoon.
