A Year of Indiana History - 2016 |
Brainchild of Indianapolis Motor Speedway founder Carl G. Fisher, the Lincoln Highway Association formed in 1913. The Lincoln Highway eventually ran through thirteen states as it wended its way from New York to California. Spurred by the idea, Fisher next helped organize a meeting of interested governors in Nashville, Tennessee to plan and build a similar highway running from north to south. The governors met on April 3, 1915 and selected a commission to plan the route. The Dixie Highway would run on a north/south axis, meeting the Lincoln Highway at Michigan and Washington Streets in South Bend, Indiana. The Dixie Highway connected Michigan with Florida and foreshadowed the US Highway System that created a nationwide system of roads.
